    What’s the deal with anniversaries?

One month? Six months? One year? How long should you wait before you celebrate your relationship?

People who are in college and in relationships often struggle to decide how long they should wait until they acknowledge their first anniversary. After interviewing several people around campus, most students interviewed thought that the one-year mark was the first time the relationship should be celebrated with some kind of gift.

Some also thought that the six-onth anniversary should be celebrated.

It has been six months since you and your partner have been in a relationship, but is it time to present them with a gift to show your affection or should you wait until a more significant time? Sophomore business major Mike Marmo responded, “Six months isn’t anything special, but it should at least be acknowledged.” Marmo added that “flowers and dinner” were an appropriate six month gift. However, he said he would wait until one year to really show his feelings with a more extravagant gift.

Sophomore business major Dan Crosson also felt that six months was too early to celebrate a relationship with anything too expensive.

“You don’t celebrate your half birthday,” Crosson said. Sophomore business major Sarah Leighton added, “Holidays only come once a year.”

While six months is a long period of time for a fresh relationship, the one-year mark is typically viewed as more significant.

The one-year milestone seems to be the most celebrated anniversary in relationships around campus, but the months leading up to one year do not go unnoticed. “We reminded each other every month, but the first year was the biggest,” said Kristin Romano, a sophomore English major, who has been in a relationship for more than a year.

While flowers and cards were given every now and then, the one-year mark was the most important in Romano’s relationship, as well as in several other’s relationships.

To hit that one-year mark with another person can be a wonderful sensation and for many, it is an appropriate time to show your significant other just how important they are.

An idea for a one-year anniversary gift according to Marmo is “a nice dinner in the city and then a play.”

However, for those of you who do not have easy access to a big city like New York City, going out to dinner can be a nice gesture.

“For a really special occasion, Tiffany’s jewelry is always a nice thought,” Leighton said.

Other gift ideas to celebrate one year of happiness are concert tickets or tickets to a specific sporting event; these can be both fun for you and your significant other and be a chance to share something you both might enjoy.

Greg Hoffmann, a sophomore business major, gave some advice on what he considered to be the perfect gift.

“A good gift is anything that you put thought into,” Hoffmann said.
