A Guide to Quinnipiac’s Unwritten Dress Code

Have you noticed that you can’t walk down Bobcat Alley without seeing at least one Vera Bradley bag? Or maybe it’s all of the colorful J. Crew flip-flops that catch your eye. There are just some styles that the whole campus seems to be sporting.

When asked to describe the “style” here at Quinnipiac, sophomore Jennifer Grollimund responded with one word: preppy. “The students are very preppy,” Grollimund said. “If you see them in sweatpants it’s definitely a brand name. Everyone has Uggs and a North Face.”

Uggs, the popular fuzzy boots that seem to have staying power, aren’t just winter wear. Students sport the Uggs with jeans, skirts and even sweatpants.

As Grollimund also mentioned, another huge name on campus is The North Face. This company makes all types of clothing, but the most popular staple around campus is the fleeces and winter jackets. The North Face outerwear selections come in a variety of different colors.

Holly Perry, a sophomore, agreed that there are items that every student seems to have on QU’s campus. “There is definitely a particular style for the Quinnipiac student,” she said.

This style doesn’t just apply to the females on campus. There are plenty of guys on campus that follow the preppy-pattern as well. QU guys can be seen wearing khakis or jeans with polos or name-brand t-shirts from places like Hollister, Abercrombie or American Eagle. One thing is for sure for guys and girl alike; flip-flops are the staple of almost every QU student’s wardrobe.

Sophomore Nicole Fiore gave us her opinion on QU’s shopping style: “Most people shop at J. Crew, Polo, Banana Republic or Abercrombie.”

If you are trying to keep up with fashion without blowing your whole paycheck, or if you are ready to splurge, there are perfect places not far from campus for you to shop at.

For the bargain shopper who shamelessly looks through the racks in Marshalls looking for a cute shirt, or nice pair of jeans, you are not alone. Marshalls is a great place to find name brand clothes for much cheaper than you can find them in other stores.

If you can forgo the name-brand labels then Dots, Bob’s and Kohl’s are the places for you. They are all on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden and are places that you can shop for what you want and need without putting a hole in your wallet. This is especially nice for freshmen and those of you without a car since the Quinnipiac shuttle will drop you right off in the plazas with those stores.

For those of you willing to venture into New Haven, check out J. Crew and Urban Outfitters. These shops are a little more expensive and offer everything the ever-trendy flip flops to more formal dresses.
