The International Business Society in collaboration with the QU Rotaract Club organized a walkathon this past Saturday, Oct. 22.
The two-mile walk, which took place along the Farmington Canal Trail, on Sherman Ave. was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hamden.
The event raised money for the Rotary District 7980 Gift of Life Foundation.
According to Admir Krvavac, president of the International Business Society and vice president of the QU Rotaract club, the Gift of Life Foundation is dedicated to providing open heart surgery for children in need worldwide. Gift of Life programs have saved the lives of over 6,000 children.
“So far we raised about $2,100, we are expecting to receive more donations in the upcoming week,” Krvavac said. “The turn out was not as big as previous years due to the weather, but we raised more then double the amount from last year which was $800.”
Many QU professors attended the walkathon on Sunday. Professors Mohammad Elahee, Farid Sadrieh, and Xiaohong He, all from the IB department were in attendance. Professor Elahee and Sadrieh are advisers to the International Business Society and prof. Elahee is also the advisor of the QU Rotaract club.
“I think that the walkathon is a great event, not only does it raise money for a good cause but it also brings communities together,” Krvavac said.”
The IB Society also sponsors other programs on campus throughout the year. Some events include a trip to the United Nations and Sikorsky Helicopter factory. The club also does community service by picking up trash in Hamden and working in a New Haven soup kitchen.
“The participants from the Hamden Rotary were able to share their experiences in community service with the students from Quinnipiac, but it’s not limited to the experience from community services,” Krvavac said. “They are also able to give them advice about the real world, as far as the preparations for the job market and life after Quinnipiac University. This event also gives a chance for the students to get to know each other share ideas and bond.”
