Chan, who earned team MVP honors last year, grabbed the attention of the Northeast Conference after putting together a strong run at the finals of the UConn Invitational last weekend. Chan became the lone Bobcat to advance to the semifinals after downing Lehigh’s No.1 singles man, Randall Smalley, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the quarterfinals.

Chan picked up a pivotal victory over Monmouth freshman Vik Gupta, downing the Hawk by 6-2 and 6-3 margins in the round of 16. This was after he knocked off Marist standout Ray Josephs (an All-MAAC player who posted a 29-7 mark in singles last season) in the opening round.

Chan’s title run was cut short in the semifinals after losing a close, hard-fought match to Marist’s first doubles stud, Leo Rodriguez. During each set, Chan started off slow and then climbed his way back before bowing to the floppy-haired Venezuelan senior after three close sets.

For his efforts, Chan was named player of the week by the Northeast Conference and Prince Tennis.

Chan on the season: “As a team, I feel that we’re going to win the NEC’s again this year. We have good freshmen and a stronger team than last year’s. The main goals are just to work hard, to win NEC’s (as a team) again for the third year, and to go to NCAAs and win a match. That would be a great achievement.”
