    New Hall Director in Ledges

A dorm full of unfamiliar faces was nothing new to Kevin Butler as he recently took over as the Residence Hall Director for The Ledges, after Jennifer Owen moved on.

“I have four years of Residence Life experience, and when this opportunity presented itself, I jumped at it,” he said.

His residence life career began in 1990 at Saint Michael’s College, where he was an RA for three years, and an Area Director for a year. He worked at Johnson and Wales University as a Hall Director, and Bryant College as an Area Director, where he was in charge of approximately 900 students.

Butler received his BA in Fine Arts from Saint Michael’s College in VT, and went on to earn a Masters of Fine Arts from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He first learned about Quinnipiac from his wife Carleen Roy-Butler, who works in Career Services. After visiting the campus from time to time, he became comfortable with the surroundings.

He has a lot of goals for the upcoming semester, focusing on programming, community, communication, availability, accountability and being a good, fair disciplinarian when necessary.

To enter into a Residence Life team midyear is a difficult situation, but Butler said everyone has reached out to him.

“With the help of Carol Boucher, Dr. Gina Grubb, and Jeanne Liu, the transition has been pretty smooth,” Butler said. “You really need to make the extra effort to build a positive rapport with the professional staff, the RA staff and the students. I like being part of a team and having a positive impact on students’ lives.”

Butler hopes to make the residents feel comfortable and enjoy their time at Quinnipiac.

“I would like to build a strong community in The Ledges where students feel welcome, celebrate the differences in each other, help them understand what it means to be responsible, and have a little fun through programming and Quinnipiac community events,” Butler said.

Butler said the Residence Life team has made him feel very welcome, and helped get him acquainted with his position.

“It’s a little easier to get into the swing of things when you have experience, but everyone is pitching in to get me up to speed. My Resident Assistants have welcomed me with open arms, and I believe my style has already made a positive influence in the hall,” he said.

Butler fit right in with the residents and has made an effort to get to know them.

“Slowly, but surely, I think they are getting used to seeing my face. On my jaunts around the building, the students are beginning to stop and chat with me as if I’ve been here all year,” he said.

Butler said the job is definitely what he expected, and he is excited to hold his position.

He said, “It’s a special job with special responsibilities. I feel honored to be here, and I hope I can make a positive impact on the Quinnipiac community.”
