Solo artist Melissa Ferrick rocked the Quinnipiac community at Alumni Hall last Saturday night. The event was sponsored by Gay, Lesbian and Straight Supporters.

Ferrick, dressed comfortably in jeans and a t-shirt, gave Alumni Hall a relaxed feel as she took the stage and played for an hour and a half. She kept the audience laughing, clapping and very entertained.

“This was the best show I’ve seen of her,” Middletown resident Rebecca Nesbitt, 22, said. “It was very interactive and very high energy. It wasn’t promoted a lot, so I’m surprised that as many people turned up as did.”

There were over 100 people in Alumni Hall, and most seemed to be fans of Ferrick. She said she loves doing college gigs and was especially pleased with the turnout at Quinnipiac and the new Alumni Hall sound system.

“As a college it had all of the requirements and the vibe was really good from everyone,” she said.

Ferrick considers herself a backwards artist. She started out with a major record label in her early 20’s, then moved to an independent label and currently owns her own label.

She was the youngest unsigned artist to ever play in Madison Square Garden and she considers that her first life.

“Because I’m backwards I suggest my fans to go that way too,” Ferrick said.

She suggests her newest music to her fans. Ferrick has released eight CD’s and does about 250 shows a year, yet still has not lost her energetic, animated personality.

Her versatile voice and quick guitar playing kept the audience entertained as well as her jokes between songs.

After the concert, Ferrick received a standing ovation. The members of G.L.A.S.S were pleased with the turnout. In previous years, there hasn’t been such support.

“I think they should have more G.L.A.S.S events on weekends,” Nesbitt said. “It’s a culture that is worth experiencing. It can give people a positive vibe.”
