The fall season could not have ended any better for the Quinnipiac women’s golf team. The Bobcats wrapped up tournament competition on Tuesday. Quinnipiac freshman Krissy Unger became the first medalist in program history at the Inaugural Quinnipiac Classic. Unger’s top individual score guided the Bobcats as head coach John O’Connor also picked up his first tournament win.
“Obviously, I am very proud of the girls,” O’Connor said. “They all played well, especially Krissy Unger who shot a 77 today after a 79 yesterday to take the medalist award.”
Unger started round two, tied for the lead with Merrimack’s Ali Reed and Wagner’s Kathryn Jimerson. As a team, the Bobcats also trailed Merrimack by two strokes after the first round (332-330). However, Quinnipiac pulled away in the second round, defeating Merrimack by five strokes, 661-666. Unger finished the tournament and day two carding a 77 (+5) to go along with her first-day 79 (+7) for a two-day total of 156 (+12).
The Bobcats were hosting The Quinnipiac Classic at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. on Monday and at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford on Tuesday. The invitational features Fairfield, Wagner, St. Francis (N.Y.), Delaware State and Merrimack.
Meanwhile, the New York native, Unger’s 77 ties her previous best score and career low round which she posted at the Rutger’s Invitational on Oct. 5 while her two-day total is five strokes better than her previous personal-best of 161 at the Delaware State Invitational on Oct. 13-14.
“Today, was mostly about the team,” Unger said. “I knew we had contention and I knew we were very close. We all had to work well together and do our best and today was mostly go out and shoot a number and do it well and do it for your team.”
Senior Kayla Ketcheson finished the first round of the event, tied for eighth place with an 83 (+11). Ketcheson shot an 82 (+10) for a two-day total of 165 (+23). Freshman Jenn Whaley shot a two-day total of 173 (81-92, +31) to tie for 14th place followed by Hannah Russell who improved on her first-day 90 with an 84 for a 174 (+32) and tie for 15th place. Taylor Lambrou rounded out the Bobcats lineup, and improved by six strokes from the first day. Lambrou shot a 91 on Monday, but shed six strokes to shoot an 85 on Tuesday for a total tournament score of (176).
Four Bobcats golfers were competing as individuals. Alexa Gentile, Jessica Rotell, Angelica Muscatelli and Jennifer Forlenza all improved from their first day totals. Gentile and Rotell improved 13 and 14 strokes from a 104 and 105, respectively, to shoot matching 91’s. Muscatelli saw a two-stroke improvement, from 99 to 97, while Forlenza bounced back from a 106 on Monday with a 93 on Tuesday.
Quinnipiac finished the tournament with an overall score of 661 (331-328) followed by Merrimack College 666 (330-336), Fairfield University 672 (341-331), Wagner College 696 (349-347), Delaware State 701 (345-356) and St. Francis College (N.Y.) 732 (371-361).
