Over the weekend, the Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team competed in the 16th annual Quinnipiac University Invitation.

The Bobcats found success when junior Mary Chupa and sophomore Ariana Launie won the Flight “B” Doubles Championship on Saturday. The duo faced Lucy Nutting and Emilie Burgess of UConn in the tournament finals and secured the championship with a commanding 8-0 victory. This was the duo’s first career tournament title. The win marks the fifth straight victory for Chupa and Launie who have started their season with a 5-0 record.

“I’m extremely pleased with our effort thus far, especially in doubles,” Quinnipiac head coach Mike Quitko said. “There are several very strong teams in this year’s tournament and to come away with a victory says a lot about our team. Mary and Ariana are playing very well together and will only get better as the season continues.”

On Sunday, seniors Rachel Cantor and Erin Suvar tried to follow Chupa and Launie’s title win with victories of their own in the singles tournament. Unfortunately neither could get past the semifinals.

Cantor battled through leg cramps during her match with Marisela Aviles of Providence College in the Flight “A” semifinals. Cantor was defeated 6-0, 6-4.

Suvar faced another Big East opponent in the Flight “D” semifinals as she went head-to-head with Maria Rodriguez of Seton Hall. Suvar was defeated 6-0, 7-5.

Quitko was happy with the way his team performed in this tournament, the second tournament of this young season, and is optimistic about his team’s chances in the future.

“The team is growing,” Quitko said. “Every time we get out there, we are playing a little bit better. We have to work on getting into better shape because we had a little bit of cramping and it’s important to be healthy. But if we stay healthy, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
