SPB’s Oktoberfest spreads Halloween fun on campus

Any student who walked into the student center last Friday probably heard disco music reverberating from the dining hall or noticed the cafeteria staff dressed in attire from the 1970s.
On Wednesday, several students received a knock on the door and were greeted by a group of students in Halloween costumes handing out candy.
These events were part of the week-long Oktoberfest sponsored by the Student Programming Board.
“This year’s event proved to be a huge success,” said SPB President Erin Giroux.
She said the turnout at each event was busy and well received by students.
The theme for this year was “The Ghost of the Brave Returns.” The week’s events consisted of a different theme each day, and included activities such as “Make your Own S’mores,” and “Candy in a Haystack.”
Wednesday’s “Backwards Trick or Treating” involved SPB members who dressed in costumes and visited the dorms, armed with bags of candy. Instead of the typical trick-or-treating custom, candy was given out to the residents.
“This event was successful, because by the end of the day we were out of candy,” said Giroux.
Last Thursday, students were encouraged to “Eat Dirt,” a concoction of pudding, crushed Oreo’s and gummy worms.
Friday’s theme was “Groovy Ghosts,” where even the cafeteria staff joined in the festivities. SPB played music in the cafeteria and handed out lollipops with a 70’s theme.
Giroux felt this year’s events were particularly successful because of the different approach SPB took in planning and advertising for the event.
In past years, the nine SPB committees were in charge of organizing the week. This year, the members were given full reign in choosing the activities. Members chose the theme for the week, the events that took place and the time and location of each event.
