Bobcats split doubleheader against St. Francis

The Quinnipiac Bobcats softball team played a doubleheader against the St. Francis Red Flash on April 10. The Bobcats split the doubleheader with the Red Flash, losing the first game 10-1, and winning the second 4-0. With the split, the Bobcats improved to 11-23 on the year and 4-4 in the NEC, while the Red Flash are now 18-21 this season and 5-5 in the NEC.

St. Francis got on the scoreboard early in the first game with a five-run second inning. First, St.Francis’ Jamie Dixon hit a two-run homerun to put the Red Flash up 2-0. Later in the inning, Kelly Slingwine came to the plate with two runners on base and took one deep to left field for a three-run homer extending the lead to 5-0.

The Bobcats managed to score a run in the fourth inning on an RBI double from the pitcher, Emily Bellush. But Slingwine recaptured the five run lead with her second blast in the fifth – a solo shot to make it 6-1.

Later in the inning, Paige Smith added an RBI double, and then Dixon added a two-run double to extend the Red Flash lead to 9-1. Later, Dixon stole home to give St. Francis the 10-1 lead that would be the final score in this contest.

In the second game, the Bobcats got on the board first thanks to a three-run homer from Katie Allendorfer. In the third inning, Mina Duffy hit an RBI single to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.

Four runs would be all they needed, thanks to a stellar performance from Quinnipiac’s ace Heather Schwartzburg. She pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out six batters for her ninth win of the season.

“In the first game, we gave up a lot of big hits and walks that led to runs,” Schwartzburg said. “But when I pitched in the second game, I hit my spots and luckily, they didn’t get many good balls to hit.”
