Golf, volleyball, outdoor track get the boot

Quinnipiac’s golf team was told today in a meeting with Jack McDonald, director of athletics and recreation, that their sport will be no more following the conclusion of this year.

According to a memo from Lynn Bushnell, women’s volleyball and men’s outdoor track will also be eliminated. Meanwhile, the cheerleading program will be elevated to varsity status.

“It was an extremely difficult decision,” McDonald said. “A variety of scenarios were explored to continue to provide gender-equitable and competitive opportunities for the greatest number of male and female student-athletes in these fiscally challenging times.

“The student-athletes, coaches and staff associated with all of the affected programs have continually represented Quinnipiac in the highest manner possible, both on and off the field of competition.”

Scholarships for the students who participate in the three sports will be honored.
