Concert Review: The Kung Fu Girls

Coming from Long Island, the Kung Fu Girls brought both style and spunk to the stage at the Space on Saturday, Oct. 4. Hamden was a stop, before New Hampshire, on their mini-acoustic tour. The one thing that everyone will know if they give Mia and Ava a listening ear, is that they are incredibly talented, but at this show they were definitley not given the recognition they deserved.

They started their 30-minute set with a new song called “Let Go”. On a ticket with metal bands who were enough to give you one hell of a migraine, the Kung Fu Girls were a breathe of fresh air and a great break from the heavily gothic music. They tried to form a performer-audience relationship with a crowd that spoke over their music, preferred to sit in the back of the room and be very uninvolved in their performance.

During their set, Mia, singing the lead vocals and playing guitar, and Ava, singing the back-up vocals while playing the keyboard, guitar and tambourine, performed both new and old tunes. The songs played included “Alone”, “Love Sick”, “Everything To Me”, “Dance With Me” and a cover of OneRepublic’s “Apologize”. Their 30-minutes on stage were full of energy, catchy lyrics and pure rock. It is no wonder why their tunes are so good; they are produced by the lead singer of the Plain White T’s, Tom Higgenson (“Hey There Deliah”).

Overall, I thought that the Kung Fu Girls did an amazing job under the circumstances, which involved the crowd being rude and not giving them the recognition they deserved. But definitely be sure to check out this group because they are sure to become a musical sensation. Right now, they have one album out entitled “Thinking of You”, which can be purchased on their Myspace and at all their shows.
