As both new and returning students settle in to life on campus, questions often surface about the responsibilities and jurisdiction of the Quinnipiac University security officers. After all, every student should understand the workings of the department that protects them.
The responsibilities of the security officers include handling all forms of misconduct on campus, such as the making or selling of false identification to minors, or tampering with fire alarms, and incidents involving alcohol and drugs. As a general rule, unless some suspicion arises, the security officers will not further investigate a situation. However, security officers do have the right to step in if an individual begins showing a lack of responsibility.
Campus Security essentially tries to maintain credibility throughout campus while adhering to the responsibilities of their position. If an officer enters a room intending to search for narcotics but instead finds a bottle of liquor or a case of beer, they will not overlook that contraband material. Their job description requires them to remove any material that is found to be possessed illegally.
According to John Twining, Chief of Quinnipiac Security and Safety, “Security officers are not looking around sniffing under doors for alcohol, but if you do something that brings you to our attention, we will deal with the behavior that brought us there and the use of alcohol by underage people.”
Security officers can enter any room in question at any time. Each student who signed the housing contract agreed to the sacrifice of the Fourth Amendment while on campus. If a room is being brought to the attention of the officers, Twining said, “They will knock once, enter and start searching.”
While searching rooms, nothing is considered untouchable. They can search through refrigerators, closets and belongings even if the items were not bought through Quinnipiac University.
There is a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drugs or narcotics and underage alcohol possession. If a student is caught with any of these materials, the officers ask that the individual act with respect and cooperation because it will be considered helpful to their situation. Noted cooperation by the reporting officer is often helpful to the student during the judicial process.
Of course, the responsibilities of the officers are not limited to dealing with alcohol and drug issues or maintaining perimeter guards at the entrance gates. Officers patrol all university buildings to ensure that they are properly locked and respond to any emergency or request for assistance in the residence halls. They also contact and deal with the appropriate authorities in the event of an emergency, coordinate the evacuation of dormitories when necessary and work with residence hall officials when appropriate incidents arise to prepare “case incident reports.”

This puts freshman Rebecca Kingston at ease. Kingston said that she would feel perfectly safe walking back from a late class because the poles are in such accessible positions.
