In a world where celebrity sex tapes are uncovered daily,, Britney Spears struts around bald and half naked and young teenage “role models” such as Lindsay Lohan are in and out of alchohol and drug rehabilitation centers too many times to count, it has become natural for the American public to encounter racy conflict in every young star who has been lucky (or unlucky) enough to grace the media. Every star,, including 15-year-old Disney pop sensation Miley Cyrus, better known as Hannah Montana, is subject to this. Is there any suitable role model left for young people in our society today?
It all started with a set of photographs that portrayed Miley Cyrus sharing a piece of licorice and leaning in close to a female friend on the floor of a hotel. Of course these photographs made her a lesbian; at least according to the media.
“They’re nothing bad! It’s not something I’m going to let slide. I’m really upset about it, ’cause it was, like, not even a big deal because that’s one of my best friends,” Cyrus said of the photos. “I have all these girls who I hang out with all the time. It’s two girls at a sleepover, and if all of a sudden that’s bad, then what is the world coming to?”
What is the world coming to?
First of all, even if young star Miley Cyrus is a lesbian, that’s her business. But obviously she has refuted this and it is extremely unfair for anyone to be portraying her in such a manner without her approval or consent. But that is what the media is about, isn’t it?
It is about adults chasing around stars, bringing to light their mistakes to make themselves feel more content with their own lives.
Seriously, how much of a life can a middle-aged reporter have if his or her life consists of uncovering photographs of 15 year old girls at sleepovers?
Recently, the controversy over Cyrus has deepened with the uncovering of sexually leading photographs taken from the teenage star’s MySpace. The photographs depict Cyrus in her underwear revealing her stomach as she lies on her bed and puckers her lips. This isn’t quite the way Cyrus is portrayed on her hit Disney television show Hannah Montana and it is certainly not the way that most parents want their child’s role model to portray herself. It is what it is, however. I will not condone these photographs in the least, but honestly, these are private photographs. Cyrus is fifteen; and I cannot deny that I explored my own sexuality in a similar manner when I was that age. The bottom line is that this is sexuality and the only reason that Cyrus’ photographs were exploited in such a manner is because she is a celebrity.
So, is there any role model left for the young people of society? Yes, there is. Miley Cyrus is overall a singer and an actress who is adored by millions of people both young and old. Her television program is innocent and so are her lyrics. In the celebrity world of great scandal, Cyrus is a role model for young people today.
