Letter to the Editor: Article raised awareness

I was pleased to read Carole Ann Kinnaw’s feature on Quinnipiac students opting for healthy and humane foods (“Saving the earth one bite at a time,” March 26). Many of today’s factory farming practices are notoriously abusive.

Calves are often taken from their mothers immediately after birth and tethered for the rest of their lives in veal crates so small they can hardly move. Egg-laying hens are confined in such restrictive cages that they cannot even spread their wings. Female pigs suffer in metal cages that are barely larger than their own bodies. Students can learn more about enjoying animal-friendly foods at humanesociety.org/recipes.
