Women’s ice hockey draws in season finale, playoffs loom

The end of the regular season simply means the beginning of the postseason for the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac heads into the playoffs as the No. 5 seed in the ECAC playoffs after tying with Brown, 3-3, Saturday night at Meehan Rink.

QU plays its opening round best-of-three series next weekend at Princeton.

The Bobcats (20-11-3, 12-9-1 ECAC) had to come back to tie after falling in a two-goal hole, and managed to do so thanks to goals by Elena Orlando and Regan Boulton.

Late in the second period, Orlando knocked in the puck after Bethany Dymarczyk’s slap shot from inside the blue line was stopped by Brown goalie Joy Joung. Boulton’s slap shot late in the third period from inside the blue line found its way past Joung for the equalizer.

Joung stopped the first 18 shots of the night (16 in the first period) and recorded 38 saves overall.

The Bears (2-23-4, 1-17-3 ECAC) raced out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Erica Farrer and Alena Polenska early in the second.

Farrer knocked the puck behind Quinnipiac goalie Victoria Vigilanti in a swarm of skaters by the net. Polenska’s wrister hit the inside of the post before finding the net.

Dymarczyk, who tallied three points, cut the deficit to one when she scored on a shot from inside the blue line.

Laurie Jolin extended Brown’s lead back to two when she broke free of QU’s defense and beat Vigilanti for the goal.

Vigilanti made 25 saves on the night, ending the regular season with 776. She also ends her sophomore season ranking second in the country in shutouts (8) and in the top-10 in GAA (1.68) and save percentage (.933).

Kelly Babstock, who set the program record for points (55), goals (29) and assists (26) in a single-season, finishes fifth in the country in points (first among freshmen) and goals.
