Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey stayed perfect with a 3-0 win over Syracuse Friday night.
This was the first of two road games against the Orange as the Bobcats improve to 5-0-0, continuing their flawless season.
After an early body checking penalty in the first minute of the game against sophomore defenseman Ella Sennick, Quinnipiac was able to kill the penalty and avoid any scoring from Syracuse.
That stop set up the Bobcats’ first power play, where junior forward Kahlen Lamarche found a seam in the slot and buried a pass from sophomore defenseman Aynsley D’Ottavio.
The puck movement stretched Syracuse’s box and opened the seam for Lamarche to score.
Quinnipiac’s offense was consistent with eight shots on goal. Its pace prevented the Orange from making any explosive plays.
Sophomore goaltender Felicia Frank handled every shot, collecting five saves and adding momentum from her first shutout last game against Providence.
The second period allowed Quinnipiac to create separation in its offense by putting 13 shots on goal.
This put too much pressure on the Orange freshman goalie Ava Drabyk, as Lamarche struck again during even strength with D’Ottavio making the touch pass from below the goal line and graduate student forward Laurence Frenette adding the secondary assist.
Syracuse earned a power play later in the period, but Quinnipiac’s kill stayed sharp and protected the middle of the ice, with Frank covering the only dangerous look.
With a lack of Syracuse power play shots and the absence of rebounds on the sequence, the Bobcats stayed productive with Frenette working the wall to extend offensive zone shifts.
Sennick and senior defenseman Zoe Uens closed lanes in front of Frank to put less pressure on her with her five saves in the period.
The third period sealed the outcome. After another Syracuse penalty, Quinnipiac converted its second power play.
Uens walked the blue line and slid the puck to freshman forward Peyton Cormier on the flank. Cormier threaded a seam pass to senior forward Emerson Jarvis, who hammered a one-timer from the circle for a three-goal cushion.
The passing sequence stretched Syracuse’s kill and created a clean lane for Jarvis to finish.
Quinnipiac added 11 shots on goal in the final period and killed two more Syracuse power plays.
Its game plan never wavered, as Quinnipiac again forced hurried touches and cleared before any scoring plays developed.
The Bobcats finished two-for-three on the power play and were perfect on four penalty kills, a special teams edge that defined the night.
Syracuse had opportunities but could not capitalize on them. Junior defenseman Jocelyn Fiala committed two penalties that led to both Quinnipiac power play goals. Freshman defenseman Rachel Walsh took a penalty in the second that extended zone time before the even-strength strike.
Quinnipiac outshot Syracuse 32-19, thanks to the efforts of Lamarche and her two goals. Frank earned her second consecutive shutout, bringing a lockdown presence in the net that the Orange was not able to get through.
Quinnipiac will face off against Syracuse again Saturday, Oct. 11, as it looks to complete the series sweep. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
