Three hundred and fifty freshmen participated in the all-day Hall Wars event that took place Saturday, Sept. 8 on the quad.

Additionally, there were over 200 volunteers from the student programming board, residence hall council and members of Greek life, particularly Sigma Phi Epsilon, the event’s sponsor.

“President Lahey stopped by for the first time since we’ve had Hall Wars, which really shows how far we’ve come,” said Mike Bohmerwald, the head of Hall Wars.

The event, in its third year, raises money for youth aids. “We’ll be raising over $12,000 this year, but we won’t know the exact amount until next week,” Bohmerwald said. “Brothers collect money during the summer from parents and friends and then we go through the dorms in the beginning of the year,” he said. Sig Ep also raises money with a table in the student center. This year, the event raised just over $12,000.

Although the event was similar to previous Hall Wars, this year’s event had some new additions.

“This year we added a dunk tank and snow cones,” Bohmerwald said.

Freshmen enthusiastically participated in the events throughout the 85-degree day.

“It seemed like it would be a lot of fun. I saw the flyers and it was a really nice day so I’m glad I did,” said Jake Friedman, a freshman member of the Dana team.

Not only did the event raise money for a good cause, but it also allowed for members of the freshman class to get to know each other.

“It helped me bond with kids in my building. Since I live in Dana, I’m already really close with my floor but it helped me bond with other people in the building,” Friedman said.

Activities throughout the day included kickball, a barbeque and a raffle. “I’m really glad I did it and I would recommend for others to do it in the future,” Friedman said.
