College students are tired and out of energy. They spend all day in class and then all night studying and get no sleep. But even students who get six to eight hours of sleep are still exhausted. It could be that they aren’t getting the proper amount of vitamins.
Studies have shown that most college students are not getting the right amount of daily vitamins. Taking a daily vitamin can help your body get the nutrients it needs.
Experts believe that the best way to get the daily requirements of vitamins is to simply eat a balanced diet. However, even when a student is eating a balanced diet, many of the foods they eat contain ingredients that can reduce the level of naturally occurring vitamins.
College students are known for having some of the worst eating habits, often eating either fattening foods or no food at all. Neither of these options provide much nutritional value. A multivitamin containing vitamins A, D, E, and K is a great way to supplement the missing nutrients from your diet.
College students are the most susceptible to sickness. Between cramped living conditions, poor sleeping habits and increased stress levels students’ immune systems are often weakened.
“It seems like every day two or three new people I know get sick with something. I take vitamins so I don’t get sick,” freshman Kerri Hurley said. Taking vitamin C on a daily basis can help keep your immune system strong helping to prevent sickness. Vitamin E has also shown to help fight off disease.
More than 80 percent of college students report drinking on a regular basis and studies have shown that alcohol can reduce the amount of vitamins your body receives. Alcohol affects the body’s ability to absorb fat, which is where many of the vitamins your body needs are stored. When the fat cannot be absorbed, the vitamins cannot be absorbed and utilized by the body. Experts recommend taking a multivitamin containing A, E, and D as well as calcium to help counteract the effects of alcohol.
In order to get all you can out of supplemental vitamins, they need to be paired with a healthy diet and lifestyle. This includes getting enough sleep, limiting stress and reducing alcohol consumption. Taking a daily vitamin is no substitute for healthy and nutritional foods, but it can help.
