With a 2-2 tie against Dartmouth on Friday night, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team came away with a point in an ECAC game for just the third time in nearly three months.

But a 3-0 loss to No. 8 Harvard on Saturday afternoon, coupled with Yale’s win over last-place Union, mathematically eliminated the Bobcats (9-16-5, 3-12-3 ECACHL) from playoff contention.

Unlike the ECAC men’s hockey league, where all 12 teams qualify for the league’s postseason tournament, only the top eight teams in the 11-team ECAC women’s league advance to the tournament. Quinnipiac is in ninth-place with two ECAC games remaining.

The Bobcats picked up a point against Dartmouth largely due to the play of freshman goalie Connie Craig. After being beat on the first shot she faced, Craig went on to stop 34 of 35 shots and made several acrobatic saves.

“When she lets in a goal, she puts it right behind her back,” Quinnipiac freshman forward Antoinette Maldonado said. “She doesn’t play by the scoreboard. It’s always a 0-0 game.”

Maldonado tied the game at 1-1 for Quinnipiac with 54.5 seconds left in the first period. She skated with the puck from behind the Dartmouth net and flipped a shot past goalie Carli Clemis.

Then, with 13.4 seconds left in the second period, Maldonado assisted on the goal that put the Bobcats in front 2-1. After Maldonado’s shot was blocked, Karrah Stephen picked up the puck and made a pass to Kathryn Dallimore, whose shot from the right side beat Clemis.

Shannon Bowman tied the game for the Big Green at 5:54 of the third period. In overtime, the Bobcats had a power play, but managed just one shot on the man advantage and had to settle for the tie.

“I talked to the girls in the locker room, and while no one is satisfied, I did say that a tie with Dartmouth is pretty darn good,” Quinnipiac head coach Michael Barrett said. “It’s certainly a step in the right direction.”

On Saturday, the Crimson scored a goal in each period to blank the Bobcats. Craig made 24 saves for Quinnipiac, which was shutout for the sixth time this season.

The Bobcats play two games at Rensselaer next weekend. The Engineers are a Division I independent team this season, but will join the ECAC next season. Quinnipiac wraps up the season the following weekend with home games against Yale and Brown.
