Volleyball team wins first two NEC games of season

The Quinnipiac women’s volleyball team entered last weekend struggling with a 2-14 record. Their goal was to win both matches at home and put themselves in a position to make a playoff run.

Over the season, the Bobcats have struggled to remain consistent. However, they are not satisfied with losing.

“As a team we made a commitment to make the playoffs,” head coach Ryan Woodcock said before Saturday afternoon’s match against Fairleigh Dickinson. “We are extremely happy to be back at home and we hope we can turn things around.”

The Bobcats used their home court advantage well and won both matches this weekend. On Saturday, the Bobcats defeated the Knights 3-1. With this win they gained their first NEC conference win.

The Bobcats looked to make it two wins in a row when they faced Wagner University the next day. Quinnipiac has never lost to Wagner since it became a Division I program in 1998. It was looking to keep that streak alive.

They did just that. The Bobcats defeated the Seahawks 3-1 and kept their momentum going. The Bobcats received an excellent all-around team performance and improved their record to 4-14.

Woodcock attributes this weekend’s wins to his team.

“We are finally beginning to click as a team,” Woodcock said. “We have a great group of players and we are finally starting to play together.”

Coach Woodcock also described his team’s newfound faith in its bench.

“Our bench players have stepped in and done what they have had to do,” Woodcock said.

The Bobcats were helped last Wednesday when freshman Erin Overdevest stepped up and played a big role. Although the Bobcats lost, Coach Woodcock was very impressed with Overdevest’s performance.

“She stepped up and did what she had to do in the few minutes she was in,” Woodcock said.

Against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, the Bobcats received another outstanding performance from another freshman, Crista Valentino. She had a career game and helped her team earn the win.

“Crista did a phenomenal job,” Woodcock said. “Her performance was completely unexpected, but it definitely helped us earn the win.”

The Bobcats hope to continue playing well and keep the momentum rolling into next weekend when they play Providence College.
