March – it signals the ending of winter and the beginning of the warmer weather. There is also that one week where students get a break from their studying and enjoy a spring break. Some people spend time with old friends, others go to exotic places.

“I think the stereotypical spring break usually has something to do with traveling. You ‘spring’ out of the house and take a ‘break’ from everything…especially homework,” Rosa Nieves, junior sociology major, said.

While some Quinnipiac students will spend the time basking in the sun someplace warm, others will spend time at home with friends and family. While others are finding different and unique places to visit. But regardless of where they spend their time, QU students are excited about a week off away from school but most importantly, away from classes and homework.

“I’m going to enjoy being out of school for a week and with my friends and family having a good time for spring break,” Liz O’Donnell, freshman respiratory care major, said.

“I’m going to visit friends in Boston and then in Washington D.C.,” Nieves said, “Over spring break I hope to do some homework, sleep for at least eight hours a night, relax, see a few friends, and start my travel plans for senior year’s spring break. Next year will be better because you have to go and live it up at least one spring break, might as well be senior year!”

While Nieves is making plans for next year, other students are trying to find the cheapest deals on the Internet for this year. Students are using such Web sites as Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, and Cheaptickets.com. “I’m trying to keep my options open by looking for both package and separate deals,” Melissa Chesney, junior media productions major, who is looking into San Juan or Nassau, Paradise Island, said.

“I wanted someplace fun, with lots of stuff to do, but still having a beach for me to relax on. Some place that is known to be college friendly, but not too ridiculous in the ‘Spring Break’ stereotype.” But she is having some difficulty in finding a low-priced trip. “Airlines and hotels know that you want to come at these peak times and hike up the prices. It’s extremely frustrating. But nevertheless, I have not had the opportunity to go on spring break as of yet, and I believe its something that I need to do before I graduate!”

Junior nursing major Stacey Cuomo is going to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for spring break. Her vacation includes airfare and stay at an all inclusive resort. “It was a really cheap price. I have been to other spring break islands so I wanted to try something new. I just want to relax, get some sun, have fun with friends, sleep and get away from Connecticut.”

“My parents have a condo in Boca Raton so I asked them if I could use it for spring break,” junior psychology and legal studies major Dawn Miller said, “I really just want to go to the beach, do some water sports, party, go shopping and just have an awesome time with my friends. I have a lot of reading to do for classes, but hopefully I can get that done on the plane.”

“I’m going to visit an old roommate. I got really good ticket prices because it’s off-peak for tourists. I hope to get lots of fresh air, see a volcano, touch a glacier, learn star constellations and just have fun. When you go to a different country for spring break you broaden your scope. You see a new culture, new land, and experience things you could never experience anywhere else. How many kids do you know of that go to Iceland for Spring break? It’s something so different and unique,” Russell said.

No matter where you may go for the week, in the snow or the sun, students will be sure to enjoy the week.
