Goalie graduate playing after QU career ends

Former Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey goaltender Justin Eddy picked up a win in his professional debut on Friday night. Eddy stopped 13 of 14 shots as the Portland Pirates defeated the Springfield Falcons, 2-1, in a shootout in Springfield, Mass.

Eddy stopped all three shooters he faced in the shootout, although he received help from the post on the first shot. He was not particularly busy during the game, facing no shots in the five-minute overtime period, but Pirates Head Coach, Tim Army, was pleased with his performance.

“He looked confident and comfortable in his net,” Army said. “He made good decisions with the puck and directed shots out of the scoring zone. It was a real positive night for Justin.”

Eddy became the first former Bobcat to ink a deal with an NHL club when the Washington Capitals signed him as a free agent in April 2004. The Pirates are the Washington Capitals’ affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), which is the AAA-level of hockey.

Eddy, who posted a 32-26-8 record in four seasons at Quinnipiac, said it was a thrill to play against Springfield goalie Jamie Storr, a former first-round draft pick with over 200 games of NHL experience.

“I remember watching him when I was a little kid,” Eddy said. “The team played almost flawless in front of me (on Friday) and really limited my work, so it was fun.”
