With the athleticism and speed to play almost any sport, Quinnipiac sophomore Adam Abell chose soccer- the sport he has loved since his childhood.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Abell played lacrosse and was a wrestler in high school. However, those sports were for enjoyment and soccer was his true passion.

“Soccer is the best game in the world. I just enjoy going out there and playing,” he said. “It’s been the sport that I have played my whole life, and wanted to play in college.”

At 5’6, 140 pounds, the brown-haired wingback is not very intimidating to look at. But his play earns him the respect from his teammates and his opponents.

Transferring to Quinnipiac from the University of Hartford, Abell played in 11 games this past season, starting in nine of them. He missed six games due to a concussion which took place during a key stretch of conference games.

“It’s frustrating when you’re out there playing all the time, and then can’t even run without feeling dizzy,” he said.

Abell left a team in Hartford that “was a better team” and joined a squad that had only won one game last year, helping it to a 5-11-1 mark this season. “I wanted to be a part of a growing program,” he said.

Quinnipiac University was Abells’s first choice when the decsison to transfer came into play. He could have been involved in this program sooner, since he was recruited when looking for colleges, but was unsure if the team would want him since the couch who had recruited him had left the University. But, after speaking with the new couch, all his fears came undone.

“After talking to him, I found out that they were still interested, and my decision on transferring was basically made,” Abell said. Abell describes the atmosphere at Quinnipiac as being much different from Hartford’s. He said that it is “more lively here” and that “everyone wants to meet everyone else and it’s just a lot nicer.”

With another strong recruiting class coming into a young team, QU can only get better. They improved from last to seventh in one year, and Abell said they can become even better.

“We are losing only one starter. I’m really excited for the upcoming season,” he said.

There is more to Abell than just soccer. He is a huge Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens fan. He also follows all other Maryland sports, such as the state’s college basketball and football teams.

Abell is a political science/legal studies major, but he said his future is uncertain as he may plan to attend law school.

One thing is for sure. Abell loves soccer, and that is why he is at Quinnipiac.
