Vigilanti’s shutout powers women’s ice hockey

Vigilantis shutout powers womens ice hockey

A day after traveling to Princeton and grabbing a 3-2 victory, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team defeated the Tigers again at the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center by the final score of 4-0.

Quinnipiac goalkeeper Victoria Vigilanti recorded her first shutout of the season, making 21 saves on the night for her 22nd career shutout.

The Bobcats scored three goals in the second period. The first came with 16:19 remaining when
freshman Nicole Brown netted a Kelly Babstock feed from in front of the net to break the tie. Quinnipiac (12-7-2, 6-3-1 ECAC) would not look back from there on its way to a fifth straight victory.

“It was the kind of game where I felt like we were in control the whole time, so you want to capitalize and not let them hang around,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley said. “In the second and third periods we did a better job of crashing the net and getting rebounds, and that’s why we were able to break it open.”

Princeton’s best chance to tie the game came shortly after. With just over 10 minutes left in the period, Babstock was given a minor tripping penalty. During that power play, Vigilanti made a spectacular glove save to keep the Tigers at bay.

“I think the communication with the defense was key,” Vigilanti said about the game. “We’re just
talking, making simple plays, and having fun on the ice. My focus was on today, I wasn’t in and out, which is what I have to do.”

In the final two minutes of the period Quinnipiac put the game out of reach. With 1:37 remaining before the second intermission, junior Erica Uden Johansson scored off the assist from both Nicole Kosta and Regan Boulton to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

Just over one minute later, with only 17.8 seconds left in the period, junior Babstock stole the puck deep in the Tiger’s zone and scored her team-leading 20th goal on the year.

Princeton goalkeeper Kimberly Newell made 44 saves on the day, allowing three second period goals.

Quinnipiac will take its five-game winning streak into a break of almost a month. Their next action is on Jan. 5, when they will play McGill in an exhibition at home.
