Courteney Cox is a spitfire of comedic whimsy on her new ABC comedy, “Cougar Town.” As a newly divorced woman approaching her 40s, Jules Cobb (Cox) is on the prowl for a new man after the end of her marriage to her ex Bobby (Brian Van Holt). Jules must juggle finding the new Mr. Right between her responsibilities to her high-school aged son Travis (Dan Byrd) as well as her job as a real estate developer with whom she shares a close bond with assistant Laurie (Busy Phillips). Cox is at times over-the-top and a bit much in her line readings, but she has a way of connecting with the audience like any good protagonist should on television. Previously, Cox spent two seasons on the FX drama “Dirt,” which failed to catch on. The series featured ludicrous plots involving the paparazzi and centered on one fictional tabloid magazine. Not even a girl on girl kiss between Cox and former “Friends” co-star (and “Dirt” guest star) Jennifer Aniston could save that sinking ship. While it may be difficult for die-hard fans of “Friends” to view Cox as nothing more than Monica Gellar, her Jules Cobb is slowly developing into a worthy character in her own right.
