Quinnipiac womens basketball wins sixth straight

The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team scored a season-high 89 points as they defeated Mount St. Mary’s 89-73 Monday at the TD Bank Sports Center.

This was the sixth straight win for Quinnipiac (16-5, 8-2 Northeast Conference).

The Bobcats had six players in double figures, led by junior Felicia Barron who had 19. Freshman Samantha Guastella had a career-high 14 points, while Jasmine Martin made three consecutive three-pointers in the first half to finish off with 13.

“We’ve played really hard against each other,” Guastella said. “Everyone has very similar talent. Any given day anyone can go off on this team.”

After a Henderson layup cut the Bobcats lead to one at 16:53 in the first half, Quinnipiac went on a 32-11 run to end the half, giving them a 44-22 lead.

“I thought the way we started the last five or six games the defensive intensity has done a lot to spark our team,” assistant coach Mountain MacGillivray said.

Quinnipiac’s bench outscored the Mountaineers’ bench 46 to 31. There were a total amount of seven bench players to get minutes in the game to go with the starting five, including 10 points from Jacinda Dunbar.

“We’re real confident in them and that’s part of coaches philosophy,” MacGillivray said. “She wants to wear the other team down and trust the depth we have.”

In addition to the Bobcats production from the bench, they also outscored the Mountaineers in the paint (44 to 28), and fast break points (12 to 4).

“We’re all up in their shorts every time,” sophomore Brittany McQuain said.

Mount St. Mary’s (8-13, 4-6 NEC) junior Sydney Henderson scored 23 points while playing all 40 minutes. She started off by scoring the Mountaineers’ first nine points in seven minutes, but the Bobcats defense slowed her down.

“We wanted to take away the three point shot and make her put it down on the floor,” MacGillivray said.

Quinnipiac never gave up the lead once all game. The closest the Mountaineers came was when a Henderson layup made it 12-11 Quinnipiac with 13 minutes left to go in the first half.

The Bobcats’ next game will be the start of a three game road trip, as they travel to New Jersey to face NEC rival Monmouth Saturday at 3 p.m.
