The Quinnipiac field hockey team beat Holy Cross 3-1, led by Liz Marini’s first two goals of her career and a strong defensive showing by the Bobcats at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex on Sept. 24.
Quinnipiac didn’t allow a goal until the 56th minute, but held strong especially in the second half when Holy Cross maintained a long possession and kept constant pressure on the defense. The defensive stand by the Bobcats was capped off by a diving stop by goalie Jenna Grossman to stop a one-on-one opportunity with 18:26 left in the second half. Grossman finished the game with 11 saves.
Also scoring her first career goal for Quinnipiac was Kimberly Cunniff, who scored the first goal of the game almost 16 minutes in. Cunniff’s goal was assisted by Casey Adams.
Marini’s goals came at 18:35 and 29:27, assisted by Christine Grady and MacKenzie Liptak. But only one of Marini’s goals would be necessary, as Holy Cross managed just one goal.
Their lone goal came with 13:43 left in the game. Nora Happny was able to net an unassisted goal, but it was too little, too late, as the Bobcats regained momentum by dominating possession for the last few minutes of the second half.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 1-5 overall. The team’s next game is Friday, Oct. 2, at Lock Haven, Pa., against Lock Haven University.
