The infamous spring break is just a few days away and I’ve heard many different plans for the week off. The typical trips to Cabo, Cancun and Miami seem to be a recurring theme for many Quinnipiac students; five days of drinking and spending money that “poor college students” supposedly don’t have. I will not be taking part in a trip to warmer temperatures and as I sit and talk to students who will be, I wonder, are these vacations really all they’re chalked up to be?
Personally, I cannot wait to just be home and relax. This brief week will go by in the blink of an eye and all I want to do is take a break from college life. The life that includes partying, drama and all of the other fantastic elements of a 20-something-year-old’s life. Maybe I sound na’ve because I have yet to experience a trip with my friends over spring break, but honestly, I’m exhausted. The thought of drinking all day long and clubbing almost every night of the one week we have off, would only make me more tired and in need of another break.
As I said above, the “poor college student” budget that I would base my vacation off would not get me very far either. The airfare alone is pricey, then adding in hotel expenses and spending money; let’s just say it would add up quickly. Do students save up all semester, or the whole year, to blow it all on a week’s worth of alcohol? Probably. Or, maybe Quinnipiac students parents pick up the tab for them, I’m not sure exactly but I have a feeling that happens fairly often.
On the other hand, some students might say well, we don’t go away for the whole week so we have some time off to be home and some time to be away-the best of both worlds. I can see how that would be a good balance but, doesn’t that make the quick week of spring break seem even more rushed? And, if you’re going to spend that much money to fly yourself to wherever your destination may be, you might as well take some time to enjoy the sunny oasis instead of rushing back to the cold New England weather.
I feel like taking a long trip over the summer with some friends to an all inclusive or some beautiful island in the Caribbean is a better option. The trip wouldn’t be as rushed, you wouldn’t need to worry about coming right back to school to do work again, and overall the vacation would seem more relaxed.
Just my thoughts on spring break, and on a serious note whatever you do for the week, please be safe. We read and see terrible stories all over the news after students come back, or sadly do not come back from spring break after nights of drinking and poor decisions. We may do that exact same drinking in Connecticut, but at least here more people are counting on you coming back to your dorm room and it is clearly a more known environment. If you go away with a few friends, make sure you stay together and please, please look out for one another’s safety.
