Women’s soccer defeats Monmouth in big NEC win

After a frustrating scoreless run that totaled three games, the Quinnipiac Bobcats women’s soccer squad downed the Monmouth Hawks at The Great Lawn Friday night, 2-1. In addition to lighting up the scoreboard for the first time since Oct. 9, the Bobcats (4-8-1, 3-4 Northeast Conference) also ended a three-game losing skid overall.

A goal in the 40th minute by Bobcats senior Chelsea Smith ended up being the difference in the match, as her left-to-right shot broke a 1-all tie.

Quinnipiac struck early in the bout, when junior Shauna Edwards found the net in the 10th minute past Monmouth goalie Jocelyn McCoy off of a giveaway by Monmouth for her third goal of the season. Junior Crystal Burns set up Edwards’ second conference goal with a cross inside of the box.

The Hawks (9-6, 5-2 NEC) retaliated not long after, when a foul enabled Stacy Kadell to score in the 25th minute off of an indirect chance, which also deflected off a Quinnipiac defender. This would be all that Bobcats goalkeeper Jill Kelley would allow, as she made two saves during the contest. McCoy would finish with five saves to her credit.

Prior to the win, Quinnipiac struggled in their previous three contests, being shutout by Saint Francis (Pa.), Wagner, and Long Island respectively. The Bobcats also allowed five goals over the stretch, including three to Saint Francis.

The Bobcats gave Monmouth only its second loss this season at The Great Lawn and third in the last two seasons.

Quinnipiac heads off to face Mount St. Mary’s (5-8-2, 3-4 NEC) for a noon matchup Sunday, while Monmouth stays home to take on Central Connecticut State (4-6-5, 1-4-3 NEC) Sunday as well.
