Quinnipiac drops ECAC quarterfinal opener to Cornell, 2-1

Quinnipiac men’s hockey had 10 more shots than Cornell in their ECAC quarterfinal opener on Friday, but the Big Red held on to the only statistic that mattered. A late second-period goal from Joe Devin, his second of the game, lifted Cornell to a 2-1 win in a best-of-three series at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.

Junior captain Scott Zurevinski scored the lone goal for the Bobcats in the first period, evening up the game at 1. The score stayed knotted until the final minute of the second period, when Devin scored on a one-timer from Tyler Roeszler with 25 seconds remaining.

Passing from Roeszler and Greg Miller (two assists each) accounted for all of Cornell’s scoring on the night, including the Big Red’s first goal from Devin two minutes into the game.

“I thought we played well tonight, the kids played hard,” head coach Rand Pecknold said. “In the end, their power play was better than ours. I won’t take anything away from Cornell, they played great. Mike Garman played great – we outshot them 20-5 in the first period and it was 1 -1 game. We’ll have to play better tomorrow night to have a chance to win.”

Quinnipiac couldn’t capitalize on nine Cornell penalties in the game.

Cornell goalie Mike Garman made 36 saves in the contest. Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke made 25.

Quinnipiac will fight to keep their season alive today against Cornell at 7 p.m.

In other QF action, Union rolled through Colgate, St. Lawrence defeated Yale, and Harvard beat Dartmouth.
