The last thing you need when you’re getting ready to board your much anticipated flight for spring break is to be taken aside by security at the airport. Everyone knows that preparing for flights has changed, but not many know how to prepare themselves for these changes. Here’s a list of things to keep in mind when you’re getting ready for your flight:
Passport: You now need a valid U.S. passport to travel into and out of the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico by air or sea. The only exceptions are U.S. territories like Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The passport application process takes about six weeks but can be cut down to two weeks if you’re able to cough up a little extra cash. Keep in mind that the application has to be done in person and can’t be completed online. Passports cost $97 for people over the age of 16.
What to bring aboard: All liquids must be either checked in your luggage or stored in travel-size containers inside of a clear plastic bag.
Passengers may only take the following items through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag:
(1) Pocket-size wallets and pocket-size purses plus contents (money, credit cards, identity cards etc.).
(2) Travel documents essential for the journey, like your passport and travel tickets.
(3) Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (like a diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
(4) Glasses and sunglasses, without cases. (5) Contact lens holders without bottles of solution.
(6) Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed.
(7) Tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs. (8) Keys without electrical key chains.
