“Ladies and gentleman, we are the Police and we are back!”

With that line, Sting, clad in a vest (with nothing under it), kicked off the 49th Grammy Awards held Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The trio rocked out with their classic hit, “Roxanne,” and held hands as they bowed to a standing ovation.

Another surprise for Grammy viewers this past weekend: auditions were held to sing alongside Justin Timberlake at the awards festivities. Viewers were able to cast their votes after watching the auditions and the lucky finalists were quickly narrowed down to three: Brenda Radney, Africa Miranda and Robyn Troup. Troup seemed to have luck on her side as she was chosen to perform Timberlake’s hit single “My Love” along with Timberlake and rapper T.I.

Perhaps the biggest upset of the night was over the award for Best Pop Album. Nominees included Christina Aguilera, “Back to Basics”; Justin Timberlake, “FutureSex/LoveSounds”; Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint, “The River in Reverse”; James Blunt, “Back to Bedlam”; and John Mayer, “Continuum.” Timberlake was expected to win, but it was Mayer who walked away with the Gramophone.

“I just got done playing. I’m nervous,” Mayer said, accepting the trophy after performing with John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae.

The stage was a friend to the Dixie Chicks as they won all five awards they were nominated for and were also one of 16 performers.

Though the night was scandal-free, several performances kept viewers tuned in. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were enthusiastic performing “Snow (Hey Oh)” following Carrie Underwood’s performance with Rascal Flatts, and Mary J. Blige received a standing ovation for her performance.
