This past weekend’s New England Championships in Boston, Mass., marked another record breaking day for the Quinnipiac women’s track team as junior Katie Gwyther shattered her previously held school record in the one mile by seven seconds. Gwyther, who just set the mark the previous weekend and the NEC Championships, finished second overall in the mile with a time of 4:50.68.
Not to be outdone, junior Joanna Perez broke her school record in the 1000 meter. Perez finished fourth in the race and ran a time of 2:58.75. In breaking the three minute mark, Perez was the first lady Bobcat ever to run a sub three minute 1000 meter. Both Gwyther and Perez are qualified to run at the upcoming ECAC’s next weekend in Boston, Mass.
Sophomore Erin O’Connell seemed to set the trend for the record breaking weekend as she set a new school record in the 800 meter. O’Connell finished 10th in her heat with a time of 2:17.39, and she just missed qualifying for the final.
The female Bobcats’ 4X800 meter relay team also continued with the record breaking trend as they too broke a school record. With a time of 9:17.21, the team of O’Connell, Jenna Nechamen, Gwyther, and Perez finished fifth overall, and they to qualify for the ECAC’s.
The women’s indoor track program finished thirteenth overall with 17 points.
On the men’s side, graduate student Greg Toomey furthered his Quinnipiac racing career as he qualified for the IC4A Championships in the one mile. Toomey finished seventh overall running a time of 4:12.84. Toomey’s faster time actually came on day one’s action as he ran 4:12.45 marking a new personal best time.
In the 3000 meter, junior Greg Brink led Quinnipiac to a ninth place finish with a time of 8:33.09. Freshman Phil Roach was not far behind as he finished in fourteenth with a time of 8:38.44. Roach was closely followed by Toomey who finished in 15th with a time of 8:41.21.
Freshman Jacob Gurzler finished in 12th place in the 5000 meter with a time of 15:30.8.
The men’s 4×800 meter relay team finished 17th overall with a time of 7:58.53. The team was composed of Rich Heffron III, Alex Grout, Gurzler, and Roach.
The men as a team finished in 35th place with two points. The IC4A Championships will be held on Saturday in Boston, Mass.
