Women’s rugby advances to National round of 16

In the fall, the Quinnipiac women’s rugby team swept through its regular season schedule, dominating the conference in route to a regular season title as well as a Tri-State tournament championship.

Today, the Bobcats picked up where they left off in the fall, this time in the National Tournament against Temple as they won, 44-0.

“It feels great, it really does,” Quinnipiac head coach Becky Carlson said. “We came out here today having played absolutely zero games in the spring. This is basically our first game and it’s for the playoffs and we are really excited about that and I think we played well.”

With the win, Quinnipiac (12-0, 7-0 Tri-State) advances to the National Round of 16 and will play in Annapolis, Md. next weekend on Saturday, April 13.

Natalie Kosko, who led the Bobcats with three tries on the day said she was very excited to move on to the next round of the tournament and hopes the team makes it to California where the National semifinal and championship are being held.

Kosko led the team with 17 tries in the Fall and scored the first two tries of the game to make it a 10-0 game early in the first half. Raechel Stimson and Megan Hannemann also scored in the first half. Krystin Orrico hit her final conversion try of the half to make it a 22-0 lead after the first 40 minutes.

In the second half, Devon Veiria, Elena Orlando and Elisa Cuellar all scored to help Quinnipiac advance.

Temple (9-3, 5-0 MARC) was stuck playing defense for the majority of the half as they consistently turned the ball over shortly after gaining possession. The Owls had a chance to get on the board midway thru the second half when they were awarded a penalty 25 yards away from their endzone. They decided to attempt a kick but it was missed, wide to the left.
