The men’s baseball team is on a tear as of late, winning seven of their last eight games, including four in a row from March 24 to March 27.
The Bobcats started their run with a sweep of Wagner in a doubleheader. In the first game, played on Monday because of rain over the weekend, sophomore pitcher Patrick Egan continued to dominate hitters. Egan pitched a complete game, allowing only one run while striking out six Seahawks. Bryan Sabatella homered as the Bobcats beat Wagner, 7-1. Sabatella and Kevin MacIlvane hit back to back homers in the second game of the doubleheader to clinch the sweep, as Quinnipiac won, 10-6.
In a game that was called in the eighth inning due to darkness, New York Tech defeated the Bobcats 8-3. Despite the loss, Sabatella continued his hot streak as he collected three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in a run. The ‘Cats left 11 runners on base.
The University of Vermont came to Hamden, only to leave disappointed. Quinnipiac knocked around Vermont’s pitching staff for 12 runs, which included a Wilson Matos home run and a grand slam off the bat of freshman Ryan Rizzo. Cameron Ball was the winning pitcher for Quinnipiac, as he only gave up two earned runs. Al Marano had three hits, including two doubles for the ‘Cats who improved to 5-8 with the win. The Catamounts fell to 3-9.
In last Thursday’s game against the University of Connecticut, the Bobcats were able to squeak out a 12-11 win in a game that was called due to darkness. Matos and Marano both homered in the game that was marked with offensive outbursts. Matos also knocked in half of the teams runs, all while batting from the number one slot in the order. Marano drove in three runs and hit a home run to make up for his two errors in the field. UConn fell to 9-6 with the loss.
Solid pitching may be what carries this Bobcat team to and through the NEC tournament. In a three day series starting on Friday, QU took on visiting Mount St. Mary’s. The Bobcats took the pair of games from the Mountaineers, 9-0 and 1-0 respectively. Egan and Chris
