Move over Sharon and Ozzy, there’s a new celebrity couple hoping to take over the spotlight this season in the form of 23-year-old pop princess, Jessica Simpson and 29-year-old former boy band heartthrob, Nick Lachey.

MTV launched “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” Aug. 19 in the 10:30 pm time slot previously held by “The Osbournes”. While they may lack Ozzy’s antics, brother-sister brawls and a house full of pets, Simpson’s spoiled ways and Lachey’s frustrations just may be enough to get you hooked.

Pop songstress Jessica Simpson, who debuted her first CD in 1999 with the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and Nick Lachey, who first appeared on the music scene in 1997 with 98 Degrees (he has since turned solo), tied the knot Oct. 26, 2002 at the Riverbend Chapel in Austin, Texas.

Six months later, MTV was filming the couple, allowing the world to see the good, the bad and the ugly sides of their personal lives.

“Newlyweds” gives viewers the chance to see many different sides of Simpson and Lachey, from them relaxing together (or more likely arguing) at their home in Los Angeles, to promoting their new CDs [“In This Skin” and “SoulO”]. Most of the episodes are packed with petty arguments and disagreements that make you realize celebrity marriages are far from perfect.

In episode two for instance, Simpson looks less than happy as she watches dancers auditioning and getting close to her husband. Lachey just dismisses her little fit of jealousy as ridiculous. And in episode six, she pushes for an interior designer while he refuses and decorates their mansion on his own, much to her dismay. They also have the typical married-couple fights of not spending enough time together and what to watch on television (she thinks he watches way too much sports).

“Newlyweds” also gives viewers a first hand view of these pop stars’ personalities. Simpson, a self-proclaimed “spoiled princess” lives up to the title. Hesitant to ever lift a finger, their mansion soon becomes consumed by her clothes in episode one. Her excuse is “somebody has always picked up after me.” She further showcases her “princess” ways when they take a camping trip and constantly complains that she’s tired, bored, hot or cold. She also manages to bring along her Louis Vuitton bag, explaining she never goes anywhere without it. She then turns to the camera asking, “is that strange?”

Even more entertaining is Simpson’s apparent clueless nature to a number of different things. In episode one, she questions why the tuna she is eating is called Chicken of the Sea. “Is it chicken or fish?” she asks Lachey. And just when you thought it could not get any worse, in episode four she struggles with the garage door opener.

Lachey, on the other hand, is displayed as the neat freak thrifty husband, who is attempting to rid Simpson of her spoiled ways. In episode two, he is outraged at the fact that she spent $750 on four items of lingerie without realizing it. He thoroughly manages to annoy her in many episodes as well by going to a strip club, not picking up his cell phone, and making an appearance at the Playboy Mansion.

“Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” seems to be another hit for MTV. According to the New York Daily News, an average of 2.4 million viewers tune in each week, with the majority of them in the coveted 12 to 34 year old group. So what is so appealing about this new reality show?

“Jessica Simpson is hilarious,” says Laurie Stolzman, a junior marketing major. “Her personality is so amusing. You don’t expect her to come out with half the things she says and does.”

Sara Gorelick, a junior journalism major agrees. “It’s so dumb that it’s funny. I would hope their marriage isn’t really like that though because, like both of their singing careers, it won’t last,” she said.

But who knows, even if their marriage fails, “Newlyweds” could be a boost for their less than hugely successful careers in the music industry. After all, the show allows them to showcase their music and become more connected with their audience.

Gorelick, however, doubts this show will send them into superstardom. “It will give them more publicity, but I can’t say that I’m more inclined to go out and buy their CDs now,” she says.
