Erica Uden Johansson scored two goals Saturday afternoon, as Quinnipiac defeated the Jr. Cambridge Rivuelettes in an exhibition contest, 7-0. The Bobcats took a total of 60 shots on the day, 25 of which came in the first period, while holding Cambridge to just six.
“Our transition I thought was great. There was a lot of turnovers at our blue line, quick D to D passes, and our forwards were flying through the neutral zone,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley. “For the first game I thought we did really well.”
Quinnipiac hit the back of the net for the first time just 1:48 into the game. Nicole Brown and Breann Frykas skated into a 2-on-1 after a sloppy defensive play by Cambridge. Frykas skated up to the hash marks before passing it to Brown, who flicked the puck past goaltender Julia Vandyk for the 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats continued to keep the offensive pressure steady, taking seven shots-on-goal through the fifth minute of play. Quinnipiac later scored again before closing out the first period, this one coming via the power play. Kelly Babstock fed the puck to Nicole Kosta across the offensive zone, who drilled it past Cambridge for a one-timer goal, giving Quinnipiac a 2-0 advantage after one.
Quinnipiac proceeded to break the game open early in the second period. Regan Boulton set up at the point, before driving the puck to the net while Johansson screened Vandyk. Johansson then redirected the puck through the five-hole to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead at 0:22.
The Bobcats later scored three more goals in the second period. At 6:59, Nicole Connery skated up the offensive zone as part of a 2-on-1. Connery sniped the top shelf for Quinnipiac’s second goal of the period. Less than three minutes later, Brittany Lyons skated through the slot before backhanding the puck past Vandyk. Later, at 11:13, Kelly Babstock hit the twine via a one-timer from Kosta for the 6-0 Bobcats lead.
“In the second we kind of settled down, made quick passes, and opened things up,” Seeley said. “Brit’s great around the net. She’s got a great scoring touch, and in tight she’s tough to beat.”
Quinnipiac final goal of the contest came on the power play, when Johansson scored on a one-timer pass from Kosta for the 7-0 advantage.
The Bobcats takes the next five days off, before opening regular season play with a two game series against Mercyhurst. Puck-drop is set for 7 p.m.
