Sophomore Furtuna Velaj tallied two goals for the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team in the 2-2 double overtime game against the University of Rhode Island Sunday, Sept. 20 at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, R.I.
Rhode Island’s Kristie Moltz opened the scoring in the 13th minute as she lifted the ball high into the net from a crossing pass in the 18-yard box. Courtney David and Ina Bjorklid both picked up the assists. Moltz registered her second goal of the season.
Velaj equalized the game in the 51st minute as she put in her own rebound shot for the tying goal.
Kaylen Shimoda scored minutes later for the Rams to reclaim the lead. She took a crossing pass from David and shot it lower right post. It was Shimoda’s second goal of the season.
Velaj responded with a breakaway goal in the 79th minute. She received a pass at centerfield from Shauna Edwards and sniped it above goalkeeper Tara Murphy’s head outside the 10-yard box. Velaj recorded her fourth goal of season while Edwards earned her first career assist.
Edwards had a one-on-one chance against Murphy in the first overtime but could not twist past the keeper. Velaj had another key opportunity to score with a shot in the 95th minute that deflected off the post.
“We took a good team into overtime after going down twice in the game,” head coach Dave Clarke said. “I was pleased with the opportunities we created in throughout regulation and in overtime.”
The Bobcats outshot the Rams 15-13 and 8-4 for shots on-goal. Goalkeeper Kendra Margulies had two saves for the Bobcats while Ram’s Tara Murphy recorded six saves.
The Bobcats are 1-3-1 for the season while the Rams stand 2-4-1.
The team will return to action Sunday, Sept. 27 for an intrastate rivalry game at CCSU, who currently stand at sixth in the Northeast Conference with a 2-4-1 record, their most recent loss a 4-0 shutout from Boston College.
Quinnipiac will host Bryant on October 4th, continuing their 10 straight games against divisional opponents.
Quinnipiac traveled to Yale yesterday, but results were unavailable at press time.
