The Quinnipiac field hockey team fell to No. 6 Penn State, 6-1, in a non-conference matchup Sunday at University Park, Pa.
Penn State (3-3) came out flying in the first half by scoring on their first four shots to open the game. Kelsey Amy immediately recorded a hat trick for the Nittany Lions, scoring three of their first four goals.
“We made crucial mistakes with our defensive corner unit to allow four goals to be scored. It’s an adjustment we’ll need to make for next week and as we move forward this season,” Quinnipiac head coach Becca Main Kohli said. “We are very pleased with the play of Nicole Lewis in net and our team stuck to our midfield game plan with the help of Megan McCreedy and Maria Malonoski. We’re going to look to make the appropriate adjustments to the attack side of the ball when we play Lehigh on Wednesday.”
Quinnipiac’s Kaitlyn Notarianni help set up Kim Cunniff’s third goal of the season for the Bobcats’ (3-2) lone goal of the game. Cunniff received a pass from Notarianni and blasted a shot on net to bring the Bobcats within three goals of Penn State.
Penn State added another goal before the half to take a 5-1 lead into halftime.
Bobcats goaltender Nicole Lewis rebounded from the first half and kept the Bobcats in the game by allowing just one goal in the second half. However, the Bobcats’ offense couldn’t muster a comeback.
The Bobcats next game is on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they host Lehigh University at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex.
