Christian Shaboo received the title of Mr. Quinnipiac in Alumni Hall last Friday.
The annual contest drew a capacity crowd as 13 contestants performed for an eager audience.
The senior class was well represented in the competition with Shaboo, Eric Marco, Andrew Chin and SGA President Dennis Kisyk in the running.
Junior Class President Steve Geller was joined by Brendan McKeon, Ben Oser and Jonathan Silva (known to the audience as “Tuna”).
The five contestants from the sophomore class were Garret Woodward, Jonathan Licciardi, Andrew Turczak, Adam Greenfeld and Mike Jones.
Hosts Nicole Penchansky and Javier Rodriguez guided the contestants through a series of rounds to determine who would move into the top three.
On stage in their casual wear, the men performed a choreographed dance routine to “One in a Million” by Bosson.
An array of outfits were unveiled for the beach wear round, ranging from Jones’ lifeguard apparel to the Troy-esque costume of Marco. McKeon performed a hula dance for the crowd in a grass skirt and coconut bra.
The talent portion of the evening showed the true skills of the contestants.
Woodward began the round with stand-up comedy.
On acoustic guitar, Kisyk and Licciardi played New Amsterdam’s “Goodbye” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” (respectively).
Greenfeld sang to a Neil Diamond track, while McKeon read a poem to his escort.
Turczak was joined by two backup dancers to show off moves for “Lean Back.” Complete with costume changes and backup dancers, Oser acted out a medley of songs including “YMCA,” “It’s Raining Men” and “I’ll Always Love You.”
More music was on the program as Geller and Jones displayed rapping prowess, Marco acted out Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” and Chin accompanied Shaboo on the piano for a duet about their time at QU.
Giving a show-stopping performance was Silva in a Chris Farley skit from Saturday Night Live, where he played a Chippendale’s dancer.
Following formal wear and pickup lines, the top five contestants moved on to question and answer sessions. At the end of the night, Marco came in third place and Turczak in second.
Judging this event were Daniel Brown (Asst. Director of the Student Center & Leadership Development), Jolynn Hamilton (Residence Hall Director), Ed Kovacs (Director of the Student Center & Student Leadership Development), Erin Twomey (Residence Hall Director) and last year’s Mr. Quinnipiac Mike Labella.
