Quinnipiac University offers a shuttle service that will take students to Hamden, New Haven, and North Haven. Using the shuttles, students can get dropped off at Wal-Mart, Stop & Shop, Union Station, downtown New Haven and a movie theatre. However, some students want to go places other than the shuttle destinations and must take a cab.
If the shuttle times are inconvenient or do not make a stop where students need to go, students can always rely on a cab to get them around. However, it is not always economically possible for students to continuously take cabs when they need to get off campus.
Metro Taxi charges an initial rate of $2 and an additional $2 per mile traveled. On average, if a student wanted to travel from campus to Wal-Mart it would cost $14. To go to the movie theaters in North Haven it would cost $16, and it would cost $24 to go to New Haven.
These prices may seem high, but when traveling with others it becomes more affordable. For instance, Metro Taxi allows four passengers per car.
Some students still think these are high prices.
“I think that’s a lot of money just to go to New Haven,” said sophomore Victoria Johnson. “I think they should give college students a bit of a discount especially when going into New Haven since so many of us go there for the clubs.”
Sophomore Meredith Roberts remembers when she did not have a car on campus and had to rely on cabs.
“Sometimes if we went to a club the New Haven shuttle would be too full, or we missed the last one and we had to take a cab back to campus,” she said. “If it was just me and someone else it was a little unreasonable to spend $12 to get back to campus.”
Others only rely on cabs as a last resort.
“It’s just something you sometimes can’t avoid, sometimes you’re stuck for a ride and then it’s fine to take a cab, but otherwise it’s not something that I could afford to do the whole year,” Roberts said.
“I usually take a cab to go shopping, to clubs, or if I am in a rush to get to the train station,” said sophomore Rosanna Wong.
“It doesn’t cost as much as it does to take a cab in New York City, but prices are still a little high. Taking a cab isn’t something I can do often, only when necessary,” she said.
Students can reach Metro Taxi at (203) 777-7777 to call for a cab or to get more information about prices.
