Community Action Project (CAP) will collect funds for Heifer Project International, a program that produces farm animals for the needy around the world.
The non-profit organization works in partnership with congregations, civic groups and other organizations as well as individual donors.
The Heifer program provides intensive training in animal management, environmentally, sound farming and community development. This organization purchases live stock and send them overseas to impoverished families. They show the families how to take care of the animals and use them as a source of income, work and then when they can no longer be used as a source of food.
Students can choose from purchasing a heifer, llama, goat, tree, honeybee, chicken or a share of their choice.
“Each and every little bit you can do to help will make a difference,” said, Katie Pataska, co-director of CAP.
CAP wants to raise funds for the cause and will collect donations through Feb. 28 from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center. Donations may also be delivered to P.O. Box #24.
CAP will also be helping out with the Special Olympic Winter Games at Powder Ridge in Middle Field on March 1 and March 2, 8 a.m. through 4 p.m.
Through April 16 CAP is also running the Tab Challenge. The student who collects the most tabs from the tops of cans will receive a prize. All of the money collected from the tabs will go to Ronald Macdonald House’s kidney and dialysis charities. Tabs can be dropped off at CAP meetings, or at the CAP office on the second floor of the Student Center.
CAP is also sponsoring a Fashion Show with the elderly in Buckman Theatre in April and an annual dance with St. Francis Middle School on March 26. On March 29 there will be a Bowlathon in Milford, and on April 6th there will be a hunger clean-up. Money will be collected and donated to hunger charities. Every other Thursday CAP helps out at St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen in New Haven. The group meets outside of the library at 10:45 a.m.
Students who are interested in helping out in any of CAP’s activities can attend meetings every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in SC 207 or call the co-directors of CAP, Katie Pataska and Nicole Murphy at x8352.
