Alpha Phi Omega attends the 2000 National Convention

At the 2000 National Convention of Alpha Phi Omega Nation Service Fraternity, brothers from the Nu Alpha chapter at Quinnipiac University spent four days in Philadelphia practicing the principles of leadership, friendship, and service.
National conventions are held biannually and the location varies from convention to convention. The delegation at the 2000 Philadelphia convention, including Katie Bruch and Rebekah Oman from Quinnipiac, voted for the 2002 convention to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Nu Alpha chapter hopes to have an even larger, stronger chapter by that point in time and is eager to send many brothers to the event. This year’s convention was attended by 13 brothers from Quinnipiac.
To start the events off, Jennifer Shea and Michael O’Neill helped out with registration at the Region One table. They were able to meet brothers from chapters all over the northeast and give them their first official welcome to the events.
Shea also helped out in the printing and publication department, writing for the “Lightbearer” daily newsletter and O’Neil did the videotaping for the closing ceremonies presentations.
Lauren Howard, a senior brother, carried the Torch of Service in the opening ceremony. This was quite an honor, because only one brother from each of the ten regions gets to participate in this ceremony.
During the National Convention, there were two banquets, a swing dance, a regular dance, an all-night Twister-fest, a pool-party, and tons of other events.
Brothers were able to go to workshops dealing with many topics ranging from “Public Relations for Service Projects” to “Four Steps For A Successful Meeting,” to “Building, Breaking, and Learning in Groups.”
Many brothers took full advantage of these workshops and have a lot of new information to add to the chapter this coming semester and in the future of the chapter.
Alpha Phi Omega will be holding Rush from Feb. 19 thru Feb. 25. All interested students should contact the Membership Vice President, Rebekah Oman.
This semester’s theme is “Co-ed Naked Service – We Do It For Hours.” Rush events will include an information session, a bare it all teddy bear drive for local fire departments, a clothing and food drive, bowling, and a formal dinner and pledging ceremony.
It is not necessary to go to all of the Rush events in order to pledge Alpha Phi Omega. Come to as many or as few of the events as you want to in order to get to know the brothers of the Nu Alpha chapter and what Alpha Phi Omega is all about.
Look for further information about Rush on signs in the cafeteria, on 98.1 WQAQ, and in the next issue of The Chronicle.
