Michael Jackson reigns as King of Pop

On Friday, Sept. 7, Michael Jackson appeared on an American stage for the first time in over 10 years for a celebrity-filled tribute concert at Madison Square Garden. The concert, which lasted nearly five hours, featured appearances from Elizabeth Taylor, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Tucker, Marlon Brando and countless others.
The show began with Usher and Mya collaborating on a rendition of Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” and they were joined halfway through the song by Whitney Houston, who immediately brought the entire audience to their feet.
The evening featured performances by many top of the line singers doing renditions of Jackson’s hits including young country star Billy Gilman, Ray Charles, Marc Anthony, Jill Scott, Deborah Cox, Monica, Gloria Estefan and Liza Manelli.
Meanwhile, Destiny’s Child performed their song “Bootylicious,” and Shaggy performed his chart-toppers “Angel” and “It Wasn’t Me.”
Two hours into the performance Michael Jackson joined his brothers on the stage for the first time in 20 years to perform a medley of their hits, including their 1970 performance of “I Want You Back.” They originally performed the hit on the Ed Sullivan Show.
The Jackson 5 were joined on stage by N’Sync for their last number, “Dancing Machine.” Jackson also joined Britney for a rendition of “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Of all characters, Guns’n Roses’ Slash joined him on-stage on guitar for “Black and White,” as well as a scorching version of “Beat It.”
Jackson then asked the audience for requests for his next song and after about two minutes of shouting and screaming, he did his latest single, “You Rock My World,” which will be on his forthcoming album, “Invincible.”
Afterwards, the stage went dark for several minutes and Jackson returned carrying a small case from which he pulled a black sequins jacket, hat, and his single white glove. The audience then went crazy as he performed “Billie Jean” as he did at the Motown 25 concert.
Soon he was joined on stage by all the performers and his close friends for “We Are the World,” conducted by Quincy Jones. In reprise, he again performed “You Rock My World” one more time for the fans dying for more.
Within five hours, Michael Jackson single-handedly proved that he is still and will persistently remain the King of Pop and at age 43 will continue to rock and sell out to any audience! Keep your eyes open for Michael’s new album, “Invincible,” due on shelves Oct. 30. Soon he will be releasing all his previous solo albums!
